Expandable Polystyrene EPS News

EPS risks and construction considerations

EPS products are usually safe and non-toxic, but materials in different conditions during processing have certain risks. Polystyrene powder can irritate the respiratory tract and skin. The EPS particles in storage emit pentane vapor, which is extremely flammable and can form a blasting mixture with air. Heating polystyrene-based polymers may release styrene monomer, which is a risky substance.

Firstly, the ambient temperature during construction should be no more than 38℃ and no less than 5℃. When it is lower than this temperature, it is necessary to select antifreeze formula for the bonding mortar. Secondly, the wind force is not greater than level 5. Furthermore, before installing and cutting the EPS components, the walls do not need to be wetted with water, and dust, stains and other debris that affect the bonding strength should be cleaned. When assembling, the assembly seam should be kept as far as possible in the center of the entire EPS member. When bonding EPS components, the mortar water is used according to the recommended amount of water. However, the amount of water added to the mortar during splicing should be 1 to 2% of the recommended amount. The freshly bonded EPS components should be maintained with care to avoid rain erosion and artificial damage.
